Last Thursday was one of those days you wish you could erase from your life. It started of good, I was having breakfest with my wife at a local restrauant, something I really enjoy and then the phone rings. It is my daughter phoning for help as she has been involved in a car accident with a transport truck on the QEW. As a parent Im thinking I need to get there as fast as I can and without thinking about paying my bill I say to the waiteres I have to go and run out the door. As we are travling down Fruitland road to the highway the ambulance flys by us and I am hoping that it is not going to the same accident I am, but also hoping if it is it arrives soon. As I enter the highway the traffic has already started to become bumper to bumper and I am trying to decide if I just drive down the side of the highway to get there faster. for many reasons I decide not to just as the phone rings again and it is the tow truck driver telling my wife he is with my daughter and will stay with her to the ambulance arrives, now I am getting really worried and think about the side of the highway again. After what seemed like a life long drive down the highway we arrive at the accident scene and the ambulance has already taken my daughter to the hospital, but I see how bad the care is damaged and wunder how bad tmy daughter is hurt. As we race to the general hospital in Hamilton many thoughts go through my mind, not all of them good, but I keep telling my wife everything will be alright, she is in good hands and on her way to one of the best hospitals in our area.
As I wait to see how she is I think of all the people that tell me they are to busy to have that family portrait done or they will get to it later as they don't have time. Today the out come of the accident could have been a lot different and I would not have a chance to update our family portrait again. But I can tell you as soon as my daughter is well again, which I think will be some time from now I will be updating our portrait. We always seem to be so busy and short of time, but this time I was lucky, someone was looking out for my daughter and I am not going to let that opportunity pass me by again.
Olivia is now home from the hospital and on the mend, and everyday I relize how lucky our family was last week. A sub compact car and a fully loaded transport truck do not mix well. As the OPP officer said to me and my wife that Thursday, I am not usally passing on good news to the family of a car and transport truck accident, you are a very lucky family. The car is a write off and we will have to replace it but that is only a car, I don't know how you would ever replace a loved one in your family.
Enjoy your family as you never know when something could change your family for ever. And by the way I went back to the restrauant to pay my bill.
